Google Announces HUGE Change to Mobile Search, Is Your Website Ready?

Written by

Google has recently announced significant changes to its search algorithm for the ranking of mobile search results. This change will take effect on April 21, 2015. Whether your website has certain mobile friendly elements will now hold more weight in Google’s search engine algorithm. How much will mobile rankings be impacted?

During a March 2015 Search Marketing Expo in Munich Google said that this 4/21/15 change will be bigger than the Panda and Penguin updates (1). As the number of people using mobile devices to access the internet continues to grow, this update is designed to help users discover more mobile-friendly content.

Google has stated that if a website is not mobile friendly, this algorithm change will not impact pure desktop search results. However, with the continuing trend showing the ever increasing number of people accessing the internet from mobile devices, it is no longer an option for a business not to assess their need for a mobile friendly site.

How Will This Affect Your Website?

In order to optimize your website’s ranking when clients or customers are using mobile devices, it is imperative to ensure that your website is mobile friendly (as defined and decided by Google) and make any necessary changes as soon as possible. Otherwise you run the risk of loosing your search engine placement across mobile devices.

To assist in preparation, Google has available some tools for use in determining the mobile-friendliness of a website on a URL basis. To test individual pages, you can use the Mobile-Friendly Test. Google’s Webmaster Tools for developers offers the Mobile Usability Report to identify mobile usability issues across a website.
